PATURA provides new test equipment for safer electric fences.
Many horse owners have determined that that their electric fences are not feared by the horses leading to breakouts from their pasture. Some suspect that their horses are not affected by the current. This frequently expressed assumption however is misleading, because a sufficiently strong electric shock would make every horse fear the fence. The only problem is how to determine if the electric shock or the fence voltage is sufficient.
With a commercially available fence tester or digital voltmeter the fence voltage can be determined, however not the shock voltage of the animal contact. The PATURA digital voltmeter (patent applied for) is available with a built-in load resistor to simulate animal contact. Important for the electric fence is not the open circuit voltage but the effective voltage that the animal feels during contact. Resistance simulates this animal contact. With a connectable resistor the animal contact is simulated. The indicated voltage with connected resistor shows what the animal really feels. If the voltage is too low (say under 2000Volt) then it’s a safe hint of problems with the fence.
With good conductive Polywire or Polytape it is possible during animal contact to still read a fence voltage up to 5200 V, whereas the voltage of a fence with poor conductive material would read only to 1700 V which is an unsatisfactory deterrent to the horse. Additional problems that the newly developed PATURA digital voltmeter points to, are bad fence connections and faulty earth connections. Routine fence testing with the PATURA digital voltmeter gives useful indication as to the quality and thereby how the safety of the fences can be improved.
